The short answer

Insomniac has still not published an official chapter list. Two post-launch walkthroughs have, and they disagree: Game8 documents 21 main chapters, GameSpot counts 30. They share an identical core sequence from “Homecoming” to “I’m Still Here”, and the difference is nine shorter missions GameSpot lists separately that Game8 appears to fold into adjacent chapters. Neither is wrong — they are counting different things.

There is still no official list

This is the first thing to know, because almost no page says it. Insomniac has not released an official mission or chapter list — not before launch, and not after. The PlayStation product page confirms the premise and the three settings and stops there.

Before launch, the community reconstructed a story skeleton from the 42 trophy descriptions. That reconstruction is now superseded by people who have actually played the game, but the trophy names remain useful because they are the one list that comes from Insomniac itself.

The sequence both lists agree on

Strip out the disputed entries and this is the spine, in order. If you are trying to work out how far through the campaign you are, count against this:

#Mission
1Homecoming
2The One That Got Away
3Raise Some Hell
4Strays
5Something Much Stronger
6Knock Knock
7Mutant Detected
8One Last Mission
9Get Angry
10Bad Blood
11In the Shadows
12Death Comes to Death
13We Were Wrong
14Hell Followed With Him
15Sinister Tidings
16Way Down Low
17Roll the Dice
18Field Test
19Don’t Go Gentle
20I’m Still Here
21This Was The Dream

Both lists run in this order. The names are identical where they overlap, which is a good sign that they are drawn from in-game chapter titles rather than invented.

Where the two lists diverge

GameSpot’s count of 30 adds these, slotted between the chapters above:

  • Back in Action, A Debt Repaid and Last Meal — placed before Homecoming, so the opening runs longer than Game8’s list implies
  • For Our Future and Jetlag — around the transition out of the first act
  • Death’s Match — near the Death Comes to Death beat
  • Red Right Hand — in the back half, after Field Test
Which should you trust?

For counting progress, use the 21-chapter spine — it matches how the game presents chapters. For collectible hunting, the longer list is more useful, because those extra segments have their own maps and their own pickups. They are not competing claims so much as different granularity.

One caveat we will not paper over: the final chapter, “This Was The Dream”, appears in Game8’s list and we could not confirm it in GameSpot’s. Treat the last entry as the least settled.

The trophy list, and why the names differ

The 42 trophies carry their own set of names, and they do not match the chapter titles. That is the single most common source of confusion in pre-launch guides, which built mission lists out of trophy names and ended up with plausible-looking chapters that do not exist.

The trophy sequence ran: Crash Course, Ground Control, A Firm Handshake, Road Rage, Hell Raisers, Undercover, Had To Put Him Down, Saturn Slam, Careful What You Wish For, Small Mercies, The Monster In Me, A Previous Life, Omega Dead, Kicked the Bucket, Struck Dead, A Sinister End, One More Story.

Two of those are worth reading as spoilers in themselves: “Omega Dead” is the Omega Red boss, and “A Sinister End” is about as subtle as a road flare regarding Essex. The full roadmap is on our trophy page.

What to do alongside the main path

Two things are worth not leaving to a cleanup run:

  • The 14 Nightmare Doors. Clearing every one at bronze or better before the credits is what unlocks the second post-credits scene and the hidden fifteenth trial. Miss it and you can still go back via Mission Replay, but you will watch the ending twice.
  • The 20 whisky bottles. Each unlocks a fragment of Logan’s memories, so they are story content rather than checklist filler. The 68 material crates feed suit crafting, which is tied to your maximum health.

Routes for all of it are on the collectibles guide. For how the chapters sit against the hub areas, see the playthrough structure page; for total time, campaign length.
