Mister Sinister in Marvel's Wolverine

Essex is not introduced as a villain. He is the man who founded Team X — the unit made up of Logan, Sabretooth and Mystique — and who found Logan in the woods during one of his feral episodes and gave him a way back to something like humanity.

That history is the whole point. Essex is one of the very few people Logan genuinely trusts, and the game spends its first half earning that trust on screen rather than asserting it in a codex entry. Game Informer's reporting describes him as a father figure to both Logan and Victor Creed, which also makes him the thing the two brothers are competing over.

The turn comes after he is abducted by Bolivar Trask, voiced by Jason Spisak. What he is when he comes back is the story's central question.

In the comics, Nathaniel Essex is the civilian identity of Mister Sinister, the Victorian geneticist obsessed with collecting and recombining mutant DNA. Any reader who knows that name knows roughly where an "Essex" character is going the moment he is introduced.

Insomniac used that. Casting a familiar name as the trusted mentor, then letting the audience's own comics knowledge supply the dread, is a slow burn the comics have run many times — and it is why the studio handled the casting reveal the way it did.

Troy Baker's involvement had been an open secret for years; players picked his voice out of trailers long before any announcement. Rather than a trailer reveal, the confirmation went out through same-day Variety and Entertainment Weekly interviews on August 13, 2026. Studios do not confirm a voice role two years after fans identified it unless the character's identity is the thing being protected.

Three departures are worth knowing if you are coming from the books:

• He has powers of his own. The comics' Essex is a scientist whose abilities come from self-experimentation and Apocalypse's intervention. Inverse's write-up notes this version appears to have inherent mutant abilities, including psychic ones, from the outset.
• He is placed inside Logan's history, not alongside it. Comics Sinister circles the X-Men and the Summers bloodline. Here he is built into Logan's own Team X backstory, which is a much tighter, more personal frame.
• The Victorian span is gone. With the X-Men not yet formed in this continuity, the centuries-spanning schemer of the comics has nowhere to have schemed. He is a present-tense character.

The trade is a smaller Sinister with a much sharper knife. A geneticist who has spent decades on the Summers family is a plot; a man who taught Logan how to be a person is a betrayal.

Essex frames the campaign at both ends. The mission to rescue him from Trask is what puts Logan in front of Omega Red — Essex is snatched by a carbonadium tentacle in the cutscene that triggers that fight.

The reconstructed chapter list carries two titles that are hard to read as anything else: "Sinister Tidings" in the back half and "A Sinister End" among the trophy names. Our walkthrough page lays out where those fall.

Trask is the industrialist driving the plot and the Reavers are his muscle, but Essex is the one the story is actually about. The rest of the roster — Sabretooth, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, Mystique, the Hand and the Sentinels — sits on our villains page.

Worth repeating one point from that page: allegiances here are deliberately unfixed. Game Informer, relaying Entertainment Weekly, stressed that Sabretooth, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike and Mystique all shift position over the campaign. Essex is the most extreme case of a pattern the whole cast follows.
