The 90 GB recommendation is not padding. PS5 unpacks and rewrites data while applying a patch, so it needs working room above the final install size. Running the drive to the wire is the most common cause of a launch-day install failing at 99%.

For context, this sits in normal territory for a PS5 exclusive of this scope — smaller than Spider-Man 2's install and far smaller than a modern open-world shooter. The relatively contained size tracks with the game being deliberately not open world.

Seven days is a generous window — most releases give two or three. If you pre-ordered digitally, the download should have started automatically; if it did not, check the game tile on your PS5 home screen and trigger it manually.

Worth noticing in that table: pre-load opened two days before any review existed. Anyone who pre-ordered digitally had already downloaded 79 GB before the first score published.

Physical copies cannot pre-load. The sequence on launch day is:

1. Insert the disc — PS5 copies the bulk of the data off the Blu-ray.
2. Download the day-one patch, roughly 2 GB on top.
3. The disc must stay in the drive to play, as with every PS5 physical release.

Budget 30 to 60 minutes for the install depending on your drive and connection. If you want to be playing at midnight, digital is the only route that gets you there — and no edition offers early access beyond that.

Patch v01.001.001 contains stability fixes and the complete Photo Mode. The Photo Mode point matters for anyone playing from a street-date-broken disc without the patch — the feature is not fully present in the shipped build.

Reviewers played with the patch applied, so published scores and performance impressions reflect the patched game rather than the raw disc.

If you are short on space, work through this in order — it is roughly least to most destructive:

• Delete unused PS4 titles first. They are the largest per-hour-played offenders on most drives.
• Move games to USB extended storage rather than deleting. PS5 games can be stored on USB and moved back to internal storage to play, and that transfer is far faster than re-downloading.
• Clear saved gameplay clips. Settings → Storage → Media Gallery. This alone frees tens of gigabytes on a well-used console.
• Install to an M.2 SSD if you have one. PS5 runs games directly from a compatible internal M.2, no transfer needed.

One caution: do not uninstall a game mid-download to free space. Cancel the download first, clear the space, then restart it — interrupting a partial install can leave orphaned data behind.

The install size is the same on PS5 and PS5 Pro; there is no separate enhanced download. The Pro build uses PSSR upscaling, which several reviewers singled out in the visual praise noted in our score roundup.
